Rocks and Minerals

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Hey guys!

Tomorrow we have a science quiz about Rocks and Minerals.

It’s very important that you understand how each type of rock is formed (Sedimentary = wind + water, Metamorphic = pressure + temperature (or heat), Igneous = forms when lava cools and hardens).

Also, be sure to understand how fossils form. Remember the four steps:
1. The soft parts of the animal rot away and decompose. (The soft parts are the skin, eyes, organs, muscles)
2. The remaining bones are covered by layers of sediment.
3. The sediment and bones harden and become sedimentary rocks.
4. The fossil comes up to the surface and is discovered.

Remember that the Earth has 3 layers: Core (middle of the Earth), Mantle (the layer on top of the Core), Crust (the surface of the Earth where we live).

Be sure to study from the hand-out that we worked on in class on Friday. I have attached it below with the correct answers:

Science Quiz, Friday 15

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

Tomorrow we will have our Science Quiz about the parts of the plants and their needs.

Here you can find some notes that will help you study for the quiz:

Plants have needs. These are: water, sunlight, nutrients and air.
Plant parts help them meet their needs. The parts of the plant are: roots, stem, leaves.
The roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil. The stem helps the plant stay straight and carries water and nutrients from the roots to the leaves. The leaves make the food for the plant.

Leaves make the food through a process called photosynthesis. For this process, the plant needs water, sunlight, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll.
Chlorophyll is the green substance that helps plants make food.
The results of photosynthesis are oxygen and sugar.

Please review the life cycle of the plant. Remember, you don’t have to memorize it, you have to be able to tell what you see in the picture.

Good luck!! I hope this helps you, I’m sure you will do great :)

Here you will also find today’s homework and reprint it at home for practice.

Plant Parts

Friday, April 8th, 2011

This week in science we did a project about Life Cycles, where we explained the life cycle of a plant and an animal (a dog).

Yesterday we started discussing the parts of the plant and what they do. We copied the vocabulary words in the Science notebook. They are:
- Nutrients: The parts of the soil that help plants grow and stay healthy
- Roots: The part of the plant that helps the plant absorb nutrients and water from the soil
- Stem: The part of the plant that grows above ground and helps hold the plant up. It also carries water and nutrients up to the leaves.
- Leaf: The part of the plant that grows out of the stem and is where a plant makes food.

Next week, we will work on a hand-out explaining what the functions of these parts are. You can find the hand-out here, in case you miss class.

Have a nice weekend!

Thursday’s Quiz

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Hi guys!!

On Thursday we will have our first Science quiz. You should study from your notebook, but also make sure you read Lesson 1 in the book.

You should know the vocabulary, the difference between living and nonliving things, the difference between plant and animal cells, the functions of the cell parts and you should be able to label a plant and animal cell.

Below I am writing the functions of the cell parts:

Nucleus: controls everything the cell does.
Cell Membrane: protects the cell
Cell Wall: helps the plant stay straight. Only the plant cell.
Vacuole: stores the plant’s food
Cytoplasm: fills the inside of the cell.
Chloroplast: makes food for the cell. Only the plant cell.

Also, tomorrow we will work on a hand-out in class, labeling the parts of the cell. You can also find it here in the link below.

Study hard, I’m sure you will do great on the quiz.

Chapter 1, Lesson 1: What are Some Types of Living Things?

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Yesterday we started talking about the different types of living things. We learned that an organism is any living thing, like animals and plants. Then we worked on a hand-out that was pasted to the Science notebook where we learned 3 differences between living and nonliving things. These are:

- Living things reproduce
- Living things need energy
- Living things react to changes.

Today, we will start learning about cells. We will study the structure of a plant cell and an animal cell and the difference between the two.

Attached you will find a copy of yesterday’s hand-out.

What should your notebook look like?

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Hi guys!

I know some of you missed school the first couple of days, so I decided to post here what your notebook should be looking like by now. You should have:
1 journal from Friday, March 11. The question was: “Write 4 sentences telling what you would like to learn in science this year and why”.
2 hand-outs about Tools of Inquiry that you can also find on this blog in the post “Tools of Inquiry”
1 journal for today, Wednesday, March 16. The question was: “What question do you have about science that you can make an experiment to answer”?  This last question is about the Scientific Method. For the rest of the week, we will be working on writing the hypothesis for this question and then create the actual experiment.

Below you will find the hand-out that we will be working on tomorrow using our question from today’s Journal. Friday’s work will count as extra points for the first quiz; you could earn up to 5 bonus points.

Tools of Inquiry

Monday, March 14th, 2011

Today in class we learned about the different tools of inquiry. We worked on a hand-out describing the 5 tools we learned about and what they are used for in science.

On the link below you can find a copy of that hand-out. Remember, if you don’t come to school one day you have to make sure you catch up and have your notebook up to date.

I hope you are enjoying science class as much as I am!

Getting Ready for Science

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Hi guys!

This year we will be doing lab work and projects. This is why it is very important that we understand everything about the tools we will be using for experiments and labs. I have attached the power point presentation we will be seeing in class, so you can have all the information with you.
I will also be giving you hand-outs with this information, which I’ll also post here.

If you have trouble downloading the presentation, please let me know.

See you soon!
Ms. Eder

Getting Ready for Science, Presentation

Hi Everyone!

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011

Welcome to 3rd grade!

My name is Ms. Alexandra Eder and I will be your science teacher this year. I am very excited to meet all of you!

This year we will be working on a lot of experiments and cool projects for our class, so make sure you bring your thinking caps on from the very first day and be ready to ask, ask, ask a lot of questions and LEARN a lot of new, fun things.

I’m looking forward to having a great year with you. With your help, we can make this class fun, but most importantly, a place where you can feel safe to ask what you don’t know, bring information to class, and suggest what you would like to learn about.

Check our class blog regularly. Here, you will find all the videos we see in class, review questions, opportunities for bonus points, and other interesting information to expand on what we learn in class.

I can’t wait to see you next week!

Ms. Eder
